Tekniqlingz presents “Check Da Tekniq” : A Hip Hop and Modern Tinikling Community Dance Workshop featuring founder and executive director of Tekniqlingz and the Tekniqlingz Dance crew, Gabe Torno.
This workshop will consist of learning the basics of the Tinikling Filipino bamboo dance and incorporating Hip-Hop and modern elements alongside commetary on the significance of modernization of cultural and traditional dances today.
Gabe Torno is a dancer, choreographer, and nonprofit director from Aiea, Hawaii. His ancestral roots in the Philippines hails from San Fernando, Pampango with lineage from Western Visayas (Negros Occidental). His primary dance forms are Hip-Hop and Philippine dance. He was first immersed in Filipino folk dance through joining his first Filipino club in college at Chaminade University in 2004. He danced with the Kababayan Filipino Club at Chaminade from 2004-2006. Later on, he performed off and on with the University of Hawaii’s Katipunan Club’s Filipino folk dance troup from 2006-2008 until he formed the Tekniqlingz Dance Crew in mid 2008. He specializes and has a close affinity with the Tinikling Filipino bamboo dance. He is a Masters of Business Administration graduate at Chaminade University and Bachelors of Arts in Ethnic Studies graduate at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In his previous professions, he has worked in various educational and non-profit organizations such as the Bishop Museum, Read Aloud America, Island Pacific Academy, and Kids Hurt Too Hawaii under the AmericCorps VISTA program. He has been dancing informally since he was little imitating Michael Jackson at family parties. Today, you can see him dancing formally at many private and public events with the Tekniqlingz.

Tekniqlingz presents Maguindanao Memories Community Dance Workshop featuring Parangal Dance Company.
Parangal Dance Company’s mission is to create awareness and advocate for Philippine Indigenous People’s culture, traditions and stories through attire, music and dance.
Mariflor Medrano- Mariflor Medrano was born in the Philippines and raised in California. Her love for dance first began at 4 years old with watching the older girls dance ballet and hula in the Philippines. Mariflor is trained mainly in ballet and modern with heavy influences from local Bay Area choreographers. Currently, a high school physics & engineering teacher, she continues to dance with Parangal Dance Company, a Pilipino folk dance company based in San Francisco, CA. Her membership with the company is a way of participating in activism through the art of cultural dance.
Jonathan Mercado is an inter-disciplinarian Filipino-American artist born within the bay area. As a part of the Filipino diaspora within the U.S. he has often looked to discover more about his Filipino heritage and culture through movement. His movement is inspired through his experiences of hip-hop/urban choreography and Filipino folk dancing. He currently dances with Kularts under director Alleuia Panis and Parangal Dance Company under director Eric Solano. His passion will continue to guide his efforts of discovering his own dance vocabulary that reflects his personal experiences.
Lydia “Lady” Neff is a performing artist born and raised in the Philippines and now based in San Francisco Bay Area. She moved to California in 2010 and studied at Coastal Dance and Music Academy. Balancing her need to uplift her cultural expression, she continues to grow as an artist performing with Dancing Earth at “Treaty Making” and “Movement for Movement Building”; Kularts Collaborations “Tagabanua”, “Huni ng Tandikan”, “Maseg”, and recently, “Incarceration 6×9”; Fusion Dance Project and has performed in international tours with Parangal Dance Company. She is the founder of OPM Republic and a Kulintang practictioner as she rediscovers Indigenous Pilipino Culture. She’s a media professional and a writer by day. Her involvement with Parangal Dance Company has unraveled pre-colonial practices that has strengthen her activism to push arts and culture forward within the Pilipinx diaspora.
Kulintronica is a musician on a mission to make the “kulintang” a household name by fusing this ancient Filipino gong instrument with modern electronic dance music. As a product of San Francisco’s eclectic multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary art scene, Kulintronica was once a guitar and bass player in various groups. Solidifying his work ethic, getting command of different tempos, and incorporating more technology into his instrument, his artistic direction led him to lead an improvisational live looping dance band; until a cultural awakening led him down a new exciting direction. He learned traditional Kulintang music from Master Artist Danny Kalanduyan and have taken it further by fusing it with electronic dance music.

Tekniqlingz presents Creating Philippine Contemporary Dance workshop by Toni Pasion.
Toni Pasion is a dancer and choreographer from Los Angeles, California. Her ancestral roots in the Philippines hails from Laoag, Ilocos Norte; Antipolo, Rizal; Pampanga. Her primary dance forms are hula and Philippine dance. As a child, Toni was a dancer with the Los Angeles-based dance group, Kayamanan Ng Lahi. In 2015, she returned to KNL and performed for the Merrie Monarch Hoʻike night. When she moved to Honolulu, she continued dancing with Wayne Mendoza at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In the summer of 2016, Toni conducted her fieldwork in the Philippines researching various dance forms. She has documented these experiences and included them in her recently completed Masters thesis on Indigenous Contemporary Dance from a Filipina Perspective, also documenting her experiences as a dancer in several indigenous contemporary dance productions. Her dance interests are in exploring embodied memories, healing, telling stories, and expressing freedom.

Tekniqlingz Presents a Modern Improvisational Dance Workshop hosted by Martin Julio Sinalo.
Martin Julio Sinlao was born and raised in Sacramento, California. His mother is from Pampanga and his dad is from Pangasinan. Martin spent nine years as a part of the Sinag-tala Theater and Performing Arts Association. There, he got experience telling stories through the Filipino-American lens and got to taste various aspects of traditional and modern forms of dance. While he has trained in Jazz, Ballet, and modern, he always has a sweet spot for traditional Filipino folk dance. What he hopes to do is to allow us all to find ourselves through movement. He is currently stationed at Schofield Barracks where he works as a radiology specialist.
